Gun Cay to middle of Great Bahamas Banks to Berry Islands

Gun Cay to middle of Great Bahamas Banks to Berry Islands

The Great Bahama Bank has the most unbelievably clear, turquoise water. This body of water ranges from 6 to 20 feet deep and is absolutely crystal clear. We needed to cross the Bank in order to sail from Gun Cay in Bimini to Great Harbour Cay in Berry Islands. The trip was just over 60 nautical miles. We decided to split the miles across two days so that we would not arrive in the Berry Islands at dark. This meant that we would be anchoring in the middle of the Bank - it was a strange experience to be anchoring in the middle of the Great Bahama Bank with nothing but water in sight.

Berry Islands are more remote and uninhabited than many other more well known Bahamian islands. They are beautiful. The DC-3 shipwreck outside of Rat Cay, sitting in 5 feet of water, was sunk in 1949 and had some well developed coral - though the water was fairly cloudy the day that we were there given recent rains.

We spent 3 nights at the anchorage outside of Great Harbour Cay - then picked up anchor to explore our next destination - Abacos!
